The Egmont Trust & Kwa Wazee in Kenya

In Tanzania, 21% of adolescents reported experiencing at least one incidence of sexual violence or exploitation. In the rural areas, like Nshamba where Egmont partner Kwa Wazee works, the prevalence of these crimes is exacerbated by weak justice systems and adverse cultural attitudes and behaviours. Against the backdrop of the HIV & AIDS epidemic these incidences of sexual violence can cause not just great emotional and physical harm but also hold the danger of infection.

Egmont’s latest film explores how teaching self-defence lessons to girls in Nshamba, northwestern Tanzania, improves their confidence and lowers incidences of sexual violence. It also shows how teaching young boys to respect the rights of women and girls in their community can create a safer environment for everyone.
